Easy to install and use
First and foremost, VersaTuner is easy to use. You don't need to be an engine tuning
guru to use it. It is wizard driven to help you perform common tasks, provides visual
cues and uses easy to understand terms to describe what is being done. Forget about
tinkering with small buttons and tiny screens of embedded tuning devices. Enjoy
a premium tuning experience on the large color screen of your Windows PC, laptop
or tablet. Keyboard shortcuts and large uncluttered information screens are provided
for in-car tasks, such as data logging. Audiovisual alerts are employed to keep
distractions to a minimum.
VersaTuner is a Windows™ application, so it runs on regular computers and requires
no fancy hardware apart from an easily obtainable J2534 Pass-Thru device, used to
talk to the car. Connect one end of the cable to the OBD-II port of the car, connect
the other end to a USB port on your computer and start tuning. There’s no need to
splice any wires, install additional electronic modules or take out your ECU.
Safe and reliable
VersaTuner is a true reflashing solution, not a “piggyback” controller. This means
that it does not try to “fool” your engine control unit (ECU) in any way. It has
direct access to all aspects of engine control algorithms and retains all safety
and driveability features, such as overboost protection, provided by the engineers
who created your car. VersaTuner uses the same flashing method that is employed
by dealerships when they update the software of your ECU. In the unlikely event
of a power failure while reflashing, it is possible to repeat the process instead
of leaving you with a bricked ECU. VersaTuner also stores a backup of your stock
calibration image, so that you can return the vehicle to its original condition
at any time.
Online tune database
A constantly growing online database is accessible right from the application. It
contains prebuilt tunes and will expand as community built and tested tunes are
added, reviewed and refined. You can search it effortlessly to find a tune that
best fits your vehicle's modifications and your performance goals. Prebuilt tunes
exist from stock to extreme performance levels covering a variety of common performance
modifications such as cold air intakes, upgraded turbos, upgraded boost solenoids,
tubular exhaust manifolds, large diameter exhaust, etc. Special purpose tunes exist
such as the anti-theft tune which will not allow the engine to run and the valet
tune which dramatically reduces power output. Use the tunes as provided or tweak
them using the built in tune editor to create a truly custom tune for your car.
Forgot where you put that tune file in the maze of folders on your computer? Tired
of uploading tunes to different devices just to flash them? Not with VersaTuner
- all downloaded and created tunes are safely stored in your local database and
can be edited and flashed with just a couple of clicks.

Deep control of ECU
The stock engine calibration was designed with a specific power output goal in mind.
The stock engine control unit (ECU) software intentionally limits power to this
level. By raising these limits, VersaTuner allows the full potential of the engine
to be realized. Here are just some of the things you can achieve with VersaTuner
tunes:
- Get rid of the annoying stutter when shifting
- Open the throttle all the way till redline
- Properly eliminate fuel cut
- Increase boost levels or fuel pressure
- Adjust spark timing, variable valve timing and air to fuel rations (AFR)
- Tweak accelerator pedal response
- Tune for E85 and other fuels
- Overcome the "load cap"
- Change idle RPM to fix smoking turbocharger issues
Most performance modifications are just pieces of bolt-on hardware. In order to
unleash the full potential of those parts, proper tuning changes are required. This
is when VersaTuner comes into play:
- Use big mass airflow sensor (MAF) housings to overcome the limit of stock MAF sensor
housing
- Fix skewed MAF readings with certain aftermarket intakes
- Use MAF in a blow through configuration and safely vent your BOV to the atmosphere
(VTA)
- Use aftermarket boost control solenoids, plumbed in different modes for better boost
control
- Use aftermarket manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensors for high boost applications
- Accommodate bigger downpipes and exhausts
- Use bigger turbos
Tune editor
VersaTuner includes a feature-rich tune editor, that empowers its users to create,
modify and share their custom tunes. Direct access is provided to over 150 tables
and constants, allowing you to tweak all essential aspects of your ECU operation.
All tables are well documented to eliminate guesswork and aid those new to tuning
and experienced tuners alike.
A lot of effort has been put into making tune editor as efficient to use as possible:
tables are grouped by function for quick access, table data is displayed with rich
heat mapped color as well as 2D and 3D visualizations for easy identification of
the highs, lows and anomalies in a table. Table editing is further simplified with
the ability to select multiple cells and add, subtract, multiply or fill with a
specific value. Copy and paste cell ranges or entire tables, easily identify modified
tables and values - never before has tuning been so user friendly.
What is more, you never need to start from scratch - each and every tune published
in the online database is there for you to be used as a starting point. Work upon
the knowledge that already is there and customize the tune to match your unique
car perfectly.
Dashboard and data logging
With VersaTuner’s virtual dashboard you can view live data coming from the numerous
sensors used by your car. You can set audible and visual alerts on any of the parameters
to warn you when their value falls out of the safe range, thus preventing possible
damage to your car. Monitored data can be recorded to be analyzed or shared later.
VersaTuner leverages the speed and power of your computer and allows you to record
hours of live data at a time. Don’t waste your time picking out parameters every
time you need to log something. Choose one of the bundled presets for common tasks
such as MAF calibration, air-fuel ratio tuning, boost control and spark timing or
create your own dashboard preset by means of simple drag and drop. VersaTuner has
a unique feature that automatically lowers the logging rate for slowly changing
parameters, such as barometric pressure or ambient temperature to leave more of
the valuable bandwidth for the ones that really need it, such as RPMs, fuel pressure
or air to fuel ratio. Logs can be exported and shared with others with just a couple
of mouse clicks.
Next generation log viewer
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. VersaTuner’s advanced graphical log
viewer is capable of displaying millions of data values on a colorful interactive
graph. With infinite zooming and panning possibilities you can effortlessly see
the big picture or zoom in to analyze individual data points. Change colors, move
individual graphs around, scale them or hide them altogether, step through the log
in small increments - your possibilities are limitless. Forget having to look at
endless streams of numbers - use a modern tool to boost your productivity and improve
your driving techniques, cut down on quarter mile times, evaluate tunes and modifications
or track down performance problems.
Extensive diagnostics
In addition to monitoring dozens of Mazda-specific parameters you can use VersaTuner
to read and clear the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from all the modules of your
car, including engine, transmission, all wheel drive, keyless entry and dynamic
stability control units. VersaTuner provides a brief description of the code and
offers links to major search engines so you can quickly research possible causes
and remedies. When certain engine controls or components are removed, such as variable
tumble control system (VTCS) flaps or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tubing, an
unwanted DTC might be generated by the engine control unit (ECU). VersaTuner allows
you to disable these DTCs so they no longer illuminate the malfunction indicator
lamp (MIL). This allows you to know when something is wrong instead of always having
the MIL lit.
Launch control and no lift shifting
How about some free bonuses? VersaTuner comes with fully configurable launch control
and no lift shifting functionality right out of the box. Why pay hundreds for extra
hardware that needs to be spliced into the wiring, when your ECU can do that for
you with exceptional reliability and no extra work required. Get ready to cut some
time off of your 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) time!
With launch control, RPMs are automatically limited when pressing the accelerator
pedal at a standstill, thus helping you build some boost and make perfect launches
every time. No lift shifting lets you keep the accelerator pedal floored throughout
the entire wide open throttle run. The ECU will keep the RPMs under control every
time you depress the clutch to shift, keeping the turbo spooled during shifts so
you can start each gear with maximum power.
Community-centric approach
We realize that modifying your car and tuning it is an effort which is rarely tackled
individually. Therefore VersaTuner is a solution that reinforces the community's
role in the process. VersaTuner lets you share data logs, tunes or dashboard presets
quickly and effortlessly. A user forum
is provided where you can discuss your tuning issues with the creators of the software,
professional tuners and fellow enthusiasts. You can even let your friend from another
part of the globe install a copy of the application, send him some logs and have
him create a tune for you.
Global availability
VersaTuner software is available worldwide and has been tested to work on US and
Canadian MazdaSpeed 6/MazdaSpeed 3 and European and Australian Mazda 6 MPS/Mazda
3 MPS vehicles. The software is available as a digital download, so you don’t have
